What’s Inspiring My Design Eye in Charlotte (and Beyond)

A City Full of Contrasts—and Possibility

When I first began spending time in Charlotte, I was struck by how much this city holds in contrast:

  • Historic homes and sleek new builds

  • Polished tradition and emerging modernity

  • Southern warmth and quiet refinement

  • Tree-lined neighborhoods alongside urban vibrancy

It reminded me, in some ways, of the cities I’ve called home—each one shaping my design eye in a different way.

Charlotte, though, is something else entirely: a city in motion. And that’s inspiring.

My Design Roots: A Cross-Country Education in Style

Before Charlotte, I lived and worked in some of the most design-rich regions in the country:

  • Fairfield County, CT — where classic East Coast sensibility meets quiet luxury

  • New York Metro — layered, urbane, spatially intelligent

  • Los Angeles — light-filled minimalism, texture-forward, a sense of effortlessness

  • San Francisco — warm modernism, storied architecture, creative juxtapositions

  • Chicago — rooted sophistication, structural balance, a deep love of materials

These cities trained my eye and refined my process.
Charlotte is inviting me to integrate it all—and slow down enough to really listen to what a home is trying to become.

Charlotte’s Influence: What I’m Seeing, Feeling, and Loving:

Here’s what’s been catching my attention—and finding its way into my design work lately:

Nature as Foundation

Charlotte’s trees, gardens, and changing skies are influencing how I think about palette and texture. I’m leaning more into:

  • Organic neutrals

  • Matte, natural finishes

  • Earthy greens and weathered blues

  • Soft whites with depth and warmth

  • Layered materials like plaster, unlacquered brass, and oak

This city reminds me to design with the outside in mind—not just for beauty, but for grounding.

Architecture that Honors Past + Present

There’s a unique rhythm to Charlotte’s architecture—traditional forms updated with modern openness. I find myself drawn to:

  • Transitional spaces that aren’t afraid of detail

  • Molding, millwork, and arches—used sparingly, but meaningfully

  • Mixing clean-lined furniture with heirloom pieces

  • Celebrating old brick, imperfect wood, and storied materials

It’s not nostalgia. It’s reverence—with restraint.

The New Southern Sophistication

Forget the stereotypes. Charlotte’s luxury clients want elegance—but not extravagance. My current projects reflect:

  • Understated design with purpose

  • Strong silhouettes, not fussy ornamentation

  • Textiles that feel curated, not overly coordinated

  • Custom furnishings that feel collected, not matchy

  • Livable refinement—especially for women in transition

What I’m Carrying With Me

Even as I embrace Charlotte’s energy, I’m bringing my past with me—not just professionally, but personally. I’ve lived multiple lives. I've designed for multiple life stages. And that means I approach design with both range and restraint.

From LA, I bring ease.
From New York, I bring flow.
From Connecticut, I bring elegance.
From San Francisco, I bring soul.
From Charlotte, I’m learning to bring presence.

This Isn’t Just About Style. It’s About Sensibility.

Clients often come to me with folders full of inspiration—and I love that. But what they really want is something deeper:

  • A space that feels thoughtful

  • A room that feels finished, not styled

  • A design that makes sense for their current chapter

  • Beauty that’s not just visual, but emotional

Charlotte has helped me return to the why behind my work.

Because home isn’t just where you are.
It’s how you feel when you walk through the door.
